Born in Troisdorf, Germany. At the age of 4, he started taking piano lessons with his grandfather who was a composer.
After studying at the Mozarteum University of Music, he studied at the Franz Liszt University of Music and won a scholarship. He studied under Pavel Gililov, Karl-Heinz Kemerinck and Rolf-Dieter Arens.
After winning the "Young Musicians" Competition, he won the 1990 Chopin Competition (Göttingen) and the 2000 Liszt International Piano Competition. He was invited to perform with the Cologne Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tonhalle Düsseldorf Orchestra.
In 2001, using Liszt's own piano in Weimar, he released a CD of Liszt's works. In 2003, he released a CD containing Brahms sonatas and songs together with Peter Herr (cello). In 2004 he appeared in the "Best of NRW" and also made a brilliant debut at the Ruhr Piano Festival.
