Katsumi Ueda, Piano



He graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts music department and graduate school, where he studied under the late Jun Date and Toyoaki Matsuura. During his time at the university, he was selected for the 38th Japan Music Competition. He received the Ataka Prize in 1971 and the Kreutzer Prize in 1973. He furthered his studies at the Northwestern German Academy in Detmold and continued under Klaus Schilde at the Berlin University of the Arts.

In 1977, he achieved 2nd prize at the Long-Thibaud International Competition. Following this, from 1978 to 1979, he worked as an assistant at the Berlin University of the Arts. By the time he returned to Japan in 1980, he had already performed extensively throughout Europe. He has collaborated with esteemed orchestras such as the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Sakkyo Symphony Orchestra, Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, and nine other Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Bach Solisten of Germany.

From 1986 to 2005, he presented a total of 27 "Katsumi Ueda Beethoven Series" performances, encompassing piano sonatas, variations, chamber music, and songs. In 2007, he initiated the "Katsumi Ueda Composer Series". He is actively engaged not only as a soloist but also as a chamber musician. Currently, he holds the position of Professor Emeritus at Tokyo University of the Arts.
