Berlin Philharmonic
Although respected by trombonists around the world, he has his roots in the horn, before switching to the trombone and studying in Berlin and Chicago. Prior to joining the Berlin Philharmonic, he was bass trombonist with the Staatskapelle Berlin from 1993 to 2002 , and was also a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra from 1996 to 2002 .
He has been director of the orchestra academy of the Staatskapelle Berlin and lecturer at the University of Music, Theater and Media Hannover. From 2000 to 2004 he was visiting professor at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy Berlin. Since the summer semester of 2004 he has been professor at the University of the Arts Berlin. As a soloist Stephan Schulz has performed with renowned orchestras such as the Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra Berlin and the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
A passionate chamber musician, he is a permanent member of the Berlin Philharmonic Brass Ensemble and a regular guest with the Ensemble German Brass. In 2023 he founded the Vienna-Berlin Trombone Quartet. His first CD with members of the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic will be released in 2024 .

Vienna Philharmonic
Born in the United States, he received his Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University where he studied with Michael Mulcahy. He is currently enrolled at the Bern University of Music in Switzerland , where he studies with Ian Busfield. He is a member of the New World Symphony in Miami Beach ( 2014-2017 ) and the Orchestra Academy at the Zurich Operhaus ( 2017-2018 ).
As principal trombonist he has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, and the London Philharmonia Orchestra, as well as with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
In 2019 , he won a "Special Prize" at the 16th International Tchaikovsky Competition held in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Born in Sydney, Australia, he moved to Berlin, Germany, on the other side of the world, to pursue a musical career in Europe. In 2018 , he joined the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic as a student of Olaf Ott. Since graduating from the Academy in 2021 , he has become a regular guest performer with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Berlin, London Symphony Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and Hamburg Philharmonische Staatsorchester, making him a highly sought-after trombonist not only in Berlin but also in the European music scene.
He won the 2019 Aeolus International Wind Instrument Competition and the same award at the 2019 Concorso International Competition "Città di Porcia". He is also active as a soloist, performing with the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, the Göttinger Symphony Orchestra, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
He has also guest lent his attention to various chamber music ensembles, including the German Brass, the Berlin Philharmonic Brass Ensemble, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra Brass Ensemble, 10 for Brass , Sarapucha Brass and Ensemble Mini.
Prior to moving to Europe, he was Principal Trombonist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, a position he achieved at the age of just 20. Prior to that he studied with Scott Kinmont (Sydney Symphony Orchestra) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and during his time "Down Under" he also performed regularly with the Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras.
From April 2022 , he will be a permanent member of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Münchner Philharmoniker.

He was introduced to music from an early age by his grandfather, a trombonist and music teacher, and with the support of his father, an amateur trombonist, and his uncle, a trumpeter and music teacher, he had his first musical experiences in a village band.
His main teachers are Massimiliano Costanzi at the G. Bricialdi Conservatory in Terni, Andrea Conti at the Santa Cecilia National Conservatory, and Joseph Alessi in New York.
He has served as principal trombonist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, professor of trombone at the Lugano Italiana Conservatory, principal trombonist of the Rome Symphony Orchestra, principal trombonist of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, and principal trombonist of the Santa Cecilia National Orchestra.
In addition to his permanent involvement with orchestras and conservatories, he continues to work as a soloist and master class teacher at an international level.
