Tokyo Brass Symphony

In the autumn of 2005, the Tokyo Brass Symphony was born by orchestral players representing Japan. Shining a new light on the world of brass 10tets created by Philip Jones, they resound loudly in the present age. The thoughts of brass masters inspired by them are gathered here. The trumpets are virtuosos who brilliantly color the orchestra of the 21st century, and the trombone is an immovable ensemble, Zipangu. The horn and tuba are virtuosi who are also active as soloists. We have gathered the best members of modern times.

Trumpet Akihiko IKAWA
Belongs to the NHK Symphony Orchestra. Graduated from Kunitachi College of Music in 1985. Studied under Suimu Nagata and Hosei Soken. After serving as principal player of the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, he continues to this day. Part-time lecturer at Kunitachi College of Music.

Trumpet Takaya Hattori
Principal player of the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. Graduated from Aichi Prefectural University of Arts in 1993. Received the Yomiuri Newcomer Music Award. In 1999, studied in New York as an overseas trainee of the Affinis Cultural Foundation. Studied under Yoshiaki Takemoto, Naohiro Tsuken, Chris Gecker, and Vincent Penzarella. Part-time lecturer at Aichi University of the Arts.

Trumpet Hiroki TOCHIMOTO
Graduated from Nagoya University of Arts in 1984. Joined the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra in 1985, and moved to the NHK Symphony Orchestra in 1991. In 1996, he received a scholarship from the International Rotary Club and went to Stuttgart to study. Studied under Teruhiko Wakuda, Naohiro Tsuken, Hans Wolff, and Hannes Robin. Tokyo College of Music, Nagoya University of the Arts, Faculty of Music, Seitoku University, Shobi Diploma Course Lecturer. In April 2012, he became an associate professor at the Faculty of Music, Tokyo University of the Arts.

Trumpet Takashi NAKAYAMA
Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra trumpet player. Graduated from Musashino Academia Musicae. In 1998, he studied abroad in Munich as an overseas trainee of the Affinis Cultural Foundation. Studied under Yoshikazu Kubo, the late Fujio Nakayama, Ikuo Watanaka, and Guido Segers. Part-time lecturer at Senzoku Gakuen University.

Trumpet Jun-ichiro SUGIKI
New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra trumpet player. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts and completed its graduate school. 3rd place in the trumpet category at the 10th Japan Wind and Percussion Competition. In 1996, studied abroad at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris as a French government scholarship student, and graduated with Premiere Prix. Studied under Genzo Kitamura, Clément Garec, and the late Pierre Thibaud. Part-time lecturer at Showa University of Music.

Bass trombone Kachishi KADOWAKI
New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra bass trombonist. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1982 and completed its graduate school. In 1994, he studied abroad at the R. Strauss Conservatory in Munich as an artist overseas researcher sent by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. He studied under Goro Sekine, the late Yukio Nagahama, Koichi Akiyama, and Ernst Giel. Part-time lecturer at Shobi Gakuen University and Senzoku Gakuen University.

Trombone Haruki KISHIRA
Deputy Principal Trombonist of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. Graduated from Kunitachi College of Music in 1989. In 1994, he studied abroad in Berlin as an overseas researcher for artists dispatched by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Studied under Shoji Hara, Kikuo Sato, and W. Hagen. Part-time lecturer at Tokyo College of Music and Senzoku Gakuen University.

Trombone Takenori YOSHIKAWA
Belongs to the NHK Symphony Orchestra. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1988. 1st place in the trombone category at the 5th Japan Wind and Percussion Competition, Grand Prize. In 1996, he went to Berlin to study abroad as an overseas researcher for artists dispatched by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Studied under Kiyoshi Ito and Wolfram Arndt. Specially appointed associate professor at Toho College of Music, central lecturer at Takamatsu Daiichi High School.

Trombone 纉c Akira KUWATA
Principal trombonist of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra. Graduated from Musashino Academia Musicae in 1993. 2nd place in the trombone category at the 8th Japan Wind and Percussion Competition. 1997 1st Osaka Trombone Competition Solo Section 2nd Place. Studied under Haruo Yamashita, Motonori Mayumi, and Satoshi Kamiya. Part-time lecturer at Musashino Academia Musicae and Toho Gakuen University.

Tuba Yukihiro IKEDA
Belongs to the NHK Symphony Orchestra. In 1998, he won the Yatabe Prize and graduated from Kunitachi College of Music at the top of his class. After graduating, he joined the Osaka Municipal Music Group. In the same year, he won first place in the 15th Japan Wind and Percussion Competition in the tuba section. In 2000, he won the 4th prize and special jury prize at the Markneukirchen International Competition (Germany) in the tuba section. Part-time lecturer at Senzoku Gakuen University, Ueno Gakuen University, and Kunitachi College of Music.

Horn Hitoshi IMAI
Belongs to the NHK Symphony Orchestra. 1988 Graduated from the Department of Music, Tokyo Gakugei University. Participated in the 5th Affinis Summer Music Festival. In 1996, studied abroad at the R. Strauss Conservatory in Munich as an overseas trainee of the Affinis Cultural Foundation. Studied under Kaoru Chiba, Eiichi Ito, Noriaki Harada, and E. Tilviliger. Part-time lecturer at Toho Gakuen Music Department and Musashino Academia Musicae.
