In 1977, while still a student at Toho Gakuen, he won the Karajan Conductor Competition Japan. He studied at the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Academy and served as Karajan's assistant until 1985. At the Tanglewood Music Festival in 1981, he received instruction from Mr. Bernstein and Mr. Seiji Ozawa, and made his European debut conducting the Bergen Symphony Orchestra.
