"Golden Brass" Royal Concertgebouw

When you think of world-famous orchestras, what comes to mind? Following on from the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic is the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Netherlands. It boasts such talent and popularity that it competes for first place every year in the British music magazine "Gramophone," a world authority on classical music.

Founded in 1888 (and bestowed the title "Royal" by the Queen to commemorate its 100th anniversary), the Royal Concertgebouw has been highly acclaimed since its inception, with Richard Strauss dedicating the symphonic poem "A Hero's Life" to it. In fact, the Berlin Philharmonic was also founded around the same time in 1884, making it one of the world's most historic and traditional orchestras.

Its characteristics include its ability to adapt to a variety of programs and the outstanding playing techniques of its brass section, known as the "golden brass."

Jorgen van Leyen

The star of this performance is Jorgen van Riyen, principal trombonist at the Royal Concertgebouw, an orchestra that combines tradition and innovation, and who also works as an active soloist.

He is a leader in the trombone world, not only using modern instruments but also Baroque trombones, and striving to incorporate even more innovative forms of expression.

Born in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, in 1975, he graduated from the Rotterdam Conservatory and then studied at the Lyon Conservatory under French trombone leader Michel Becquet, and baroque trombone under Daniel Lassalle, an authority on trombone and sackbut.

He then served as principal horn at the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and has been principal horn at the Royal Concertgebouw since 1997.

As a soloist, he has performed with orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Czech Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, Taiwan Philharmonic, Nagoya Philharmonic, and Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony.

In pursuit of new expressions for the trombone, van Rijen has collaborated with various artists, including indie rock master Bryce Dessner , who is also on the program for this concert, Jacob TV, who combines avant-garde expression with electronic music, and the Alma String Quartet, one of the hottest groups in the Netherlands.

With his brilliant career and exceptional technique, van Rijen continues to challenge himself to find new forms of expression, making him a true pioneer of the 21st century trombone.

From melodic performances to performances that push the limits of trombone expression
