New Trombone Collective

being in a collective, is the number one goal of a trombonist, it can be equally difficult for other traditional solo instrumentalists. but a trombonist is always looking for connections, open-minded and to be a solid bass player in the orchestra.

In other words, in order to become a professional trombonist, it is necessary to practice daily, focusing not only on the individual but also on the collective. A few people in Rotterdam knew this well. This activity began in the late 1980s and early 1990s. A special club of trombonists gathered at the music school...where George Wiegel, later Ben van Dijk, Bert van Lier and Michel Becke started this activity together with unique and talented students. They devoted all their energy to new experiments with the trombone as an instrument and, at the same time, to refine the trombone section of Dutch orchestras and ensembles.

The New Trombone Collective indeed sounds like a powerhouse in the world of trombone music! It's fantastic to see a group so dedicated to both advancing the instrument's technical capabilities and promoting its appreciation to a wider audience. Winning prestigious awards like the Ellie Ameling Award and the ITA Award is a testament to their talent and hard work.

Projects like Slide Factory, The Young Trombone Collective, and tributes to legends like Arbie Green not only pay homage to the trombone's rich history but also push its boundaries forward. Collaborating with contemporary composers like Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner, and Nico Muhly shows their commitment to exploring new sounds and styles.

The creation of their own app is a brilliant move in today's digital age, making their music and resources more accessible to fans and aspiring trombonists alike. And their innovative collaborations with composers demonstrate a willingness to experiment with different genres and techniques, keeping their concerts fresh and exciting for audiences worldwide.

Overall, the New Trombone Collective seems to be a beacon of innovation and excellence in the world of trombone music, enriching both the art form and the experiences of those who listen to them.
