The stage is a fictional era, Egypt. Prince Tamino is pleaded by the Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter Pamina from Sarastro. Tamino heads for rescue with Papageno. Eventually, he learns that Sarastro is a highly virtuous sage, overcomes the various trials given to him, and finally marries Pamina. A fantasy story where Papageno meets Papagena and ends with a happy ending.
